In case you missed it: I’ve been the main organizer of an open coding event called #CodingNight in Frankfurt am Main since for over4 years. It has become one of the biggest coding events in Frankfurt. The idea behind the event is to meet and code together, without any pressure or technology restrictions far far away from your daily coding routine, your boss and deadlines (the last few can get on your nerves^^).
The event is open to all people and all levels, from beginners to professionals, from pupils and students to employees and freelancers.

1. Code Something New

In intro to each #CodingNight I say: leave tonight with more code than what you came with.
So in your daily job you work mainly on the same project over a long period of time. You also often have those strange technology restrictions. “No there is no time to try out the new library” is the answer from your boss to your hypothetical question. So you have to go back to basics and use the same stuff over and over again.

At the #CodingNight this doesn’t happen. You can try out new technologies, programming languages and frameworks. No restrictions. No pressure. Pure code, and pure fun in a relaxed and familiar environment. Reinvent yourself!

It’s always great to meet new people who are also interested in technological topics. There’s always something to learn at the Coding Night. — Nazim K.

2. Connect with awesome people

At each #CodingNight you can meet awesome people. Open minded, highly intelligent and motivated people. People from all over the world, people with all kinds of technology knowledge and backgrounds. You meet people from different cultures and countries. Expand your mental horizon. Make friends where you didn’t even think you could. A lot of people join the #CodingNight because of these awesome people. Join us and become one of us.

3. Share your knowledge

Another thing I use to say during the #CodgingNight intro is: leave with more knowledge tonight than you came. So #CodingNight is also about knowledge sharing, teaching each other and learning from each other. Code together and not alone. Do a project in pair or in a group to exchange what you know. Show your latest IDE tweaks, the latest mini framework you came across or teach a newbie how to build a simple website. #CodingNight is about sharing, giving and taking.

4. Together

Have you always wanted to start a new project, but after a 8 hour work day you get home and the motivation is gone? At the #CodingNight you can do things together. Code in pairs or in groups. Work on your new project together. Share your motivation! Increase it with new people and a brand new team! Doing things together is much much easier. Perhaps sharing your project with others can lead to new project colleagues?

This is what the #CodingNight is about: Sharing and doing things together

5. Do something you’ve never done before

Yes the #CodingNight always happens on a Friday evening. And this is on purpose. Why? #CodingNight is an alternative to the booze cruise, to the bar or the cinema. Instead of being wasted again on a Friday evening or night, how about creating some new and awesome stuff? Value. How about learning to code for a refreshing change? How about starting the project you always talked about? This is possible at the #CodingNight. And yes we have also beer, so you can also be the #DrunkenCoder if you want to. 😛

Finally: Pizza and beer

So in case you’re still not convinced. Here is the last point: PIZZA and BEER! At the #CodingNight we always order pizza (sometime sponsored by awesome companies) and drinks / beers (also sometimes sponsored by even more awesome companies).

So what are you waiting for? Join our next #CodingNight session and be part of the movement! See you there and code on!
