What is Hacktoberfest?

Hacktoberfest is a month-long celebration of open source software. With the mission to help drive growth of open source projects, maintainers are invited to guide would-be contributors towards issues that will help move their projects forward, and contributors get the opportunity to give back to both projects they like and others they’ve just discovered.

So then what is Hacktoberfestffm?

While the Hacktoberfest happens mainly online, local events are also organised around the world by people with a passion for Open Source Software and their communities. In Frankfurt Victoria Bergquist and her Team are organising the Hacktoberfestffm 2019. Already in 2018 there was a Hacktoberfestffm event in Mindspace. Here are a few impressions:

Over 150 participants from 11 different communities, including the Google Developer Group Frankfurt, Vue.js Frankfurt, Frankfurt Data Science, Women Techmakers Rhein Main and more signed up for the last year’s event. This year, the event is held at DB Systel, thanks to @dc7590, @dbsystel, @DBHackathon and @dbopendata. On Oktober 18th you are invited to come and celebrate open source over food and drinks with the local Rhein Main community. Doors will open at 17:00 and the event will consists of talks about Open Source, followed by free time to do coding/contributing and networking. This year, smaller workshops will also be available to attendees new to Open Source.

But is it for me?

Hacktoberfest is open to anyone interested in the Open Source community and who would like to contribute. No prior coding experience is required. Hacktoberfest Frankfurt is dedicated to providing a harassment-free event experience for everyone. Regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity or religion (or lack thereof). You are welcome to attend and meet project owners, maintainers, contributors, and community members in person and learn about the open source ecosystem. From how to start an open source project to marketing your project, sustaining growth, and troubleshooting and maintenance, Hacktoberfest Frankfurt is an open, inclusive event with a welcoming atmosphere.

But above all, do not forget to sign-up!
